You can modify Serial Link box so that Palm Hotsync serial
cable can be plugged in directly. |
Start out with a serial port/ parallel port
combination connectors for a typical computer. These can be found at
local computer/ electronics parts store.
Remove the serial connector (9 pin) from the face plate and take the
plastic cover off. Save small nuts in the plastic cover. Red
wire is pin 1. We will only use pins 2,3, and 5. Cut the
other plastic connector off.

This is the finished modification. Note
the cut underneath the original serial port connector. This cut
makes it easier to remove the cover. |
First remove four small screws from the bottom
and remove the cover. The board is attached to the cover with spacers
in between. As mentioned above, if you cut the box below the serial
port connector, it is much easier to remove the cover. Cut out a small
notch where the second serial port connector can fit. Drill two holes
next to the cut area and secure the port connector. |
Take pin 2 wire and solder it to pin 3 on the
original serial port connector. Solder pin 3 wire to pin 2.
Solder pin 5 wire to pin 5. Remember, the red wire is pin1. On the
original connector, pin 1 has a square solder pad. The cable should be
long enough so that the cover can be removed without straining the solder
joints. |
Reassemble the cover with the board and seal
the box. A computer will still plug in to the original serial port but
now you can plug Palm cable directly in to the second serial port connector. |
